Caring for the Special Child

Caring for the Special Child is designed for parents and caregivers of children with special needs.

The course aims to provide you, parents and caregivers, with appropriate competencies to explore the abilities of your special child and address his/her needs.

 

Objectives

The course will enable participants to:

  • Contrast normal development with the progress of children with special needs;
  • Demonstrate ways of addressing the following needs of children with special needs: physical, cognitive, social and behavioral and motor needs;
  • Describe a multidisciplinary team approach to caring for special children;
  • Develop a “caring plan” for their child’s development with members of a multidisciplinary team;
  • Identify institutions specially those in the community that assist children with special needs; and
  • Summarize national laws and policies relevant to children with special needs.

 

Course Delivery and Materials

This 12-week course is delivered through distance education. The course package includes printed book, video compact discs, and a course guide.
Admission Requirement

Participants should have at least a high school diploma, and a good command of standard English. Basic computer literacy, particularly the ability to work with the internet, is a must for online students.
