Master of Public Health
The Master of Public Health program aims to provide continuing education and career development for health workers, particularly those in the countryside. It is designed to equip students with a broad range of skills, knowledge, and attitudes that will enable them to critically assess and deal with a spectrum of public health programs.
The program is offered in cooperation with the College of Public Health of UP Manila.
Objectives
The program seeks to enable students to:
- Assess the health and related needs/problems and resources of communities;
- Analyze critically the interrelationship of the physical, biological, chemical, economic, political and socio-cultural factors influencing the health situation in any setting;
- Plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate public health interventions that would address identified health and related problems;
- Manage efficiently and effectively health programs and services;
- Apply the primary health care approach in public health work;
- Conduct studies and utilize research findings in the study of current and emerging problems in public health;
- Utilize the educational process in affecting behavioral and social changes in one's organization and community; and
- Advocate for health supportive/public policies and programs.
Mode of Instruction
All courses are offered by DE mode. Tutorials are done through face-to-face mode at UPOU-Learning Centers at UP Manila and UP Cebu College only.
Admission Requirements
Applicants should:
- Be a graduate of an accredited medical school or have profe- ssional training in nursing, dentistry, engineering, or veterinary medicine; and
- Have at least one year experience or previous training in public health.
In addition to the application requirements listed in the application for admission form, applicants must submit a short essay indica- ting the relevance of the MPH program to their present and/or future position.
The Curriculum
Students can choose between two plans of study: the thesis plan (Plan A) or the non-thesis plan (with a comprehensive examination). Those who opt for Plan A must complete 17 units of core courses and 11 units of electives, before commencing their 6-unit thesis work. Those who opt for Plan B must complete 17 units of core course and 17 units of electives before taking the comprehensive examination.
