The Professional Teaching Certification
Program (PTC)

The Professional Teaching Certification Program (PTC) will provide non education graduates, who intend to teach, with 18 units of professional education courses. The education courses will be on educational psychology, principles and techniques of teaching, principles of education, measurement and evaluation, practicum, and special education or organization and management of educational institutions.

 

GOALS

The Professional Teaching Certification (PTC) program, in line with the provisions of RA 7836*, aims to provide non-education degree holders with:

1. An understanding of the cognitive, socio-emotional, and physical characteristics of children/adolescents and how they develop and learn;
2. Knowledge of subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students;
3. Skills for managing and monitoring student learning;
4. A reflective attitude about their practice, and an openness to adapt their teaching to new findings, ideas, and theories;
5. Commitment as members of a learning community, contributing to the effectiveness of the school by working collaboratively with other professionals on instructional policy, curriculum development and staff development.

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Arts/Science degree from a recognized institution

To apply for admission:

1. Obtain an Application for Admission to Professional Teaching Certification (PTC) Program Form from any UPOU Learning Center or the Office of the University Registrar (OUR). Form can also be downloaded from the
http://www.upou.org/admission/forms.htm

2. Fill out the form and mail or submit it to the OUR or any LC, together with the following requirements:

  • Photocopy of valid Transcript of Records (TOR) for all degrees earned

  • Two recent 2”x2” and two 1”x1” identical colored photos with plain white background (print complete name at the back)

  • Proof of payment of application fee (Php 500.00 for Philippine-based applicants or US$100.00 for overseas applicants)

Only applications with complete requirements will be processed.

3. Qualified applicants will receive admission notices.

4. Once admitted, register in the assigned Learning Center (instructions will be given together with the admission notice).

Republic Act 7863

The Philippine Teachers Professionalization Act of 1994 requires all persons engaged in teaching, supervision, and administration of all elementary and secondary schools in the country to pass the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET).

Qualified to take the examinations are graduates of education degrees, such as Bachelor of Elementary Education, Bachelor of Secondary Education, and Bachelor of Early Childhood Education, and their respective equivalents.

Non-education graduates are allowed to take the LET with these conditions:

1) For teachers in the secondary grades, a bachelor’s degree in arts and sciences, with at least eighteen (18) units of professional education;
2) For teachers of vocational and two-year technical courses, a bachelor’s degree in the field of specialization or its equivalent with at least eighteen (18) units in professional education.
