132 Science and Mathematics trainers attend Online Teaching and Learning course
One hundred thirty-two Science and Mathematics teachers from the 15 Regional Science Training Centers (RSTCs) of the Department of Science & Technology - Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) are participating in a special offering of the Online Teaching and Learning (OTL) course of the UPOU Faculty of Education. This training of trainors, which started in September 2004 and is expected to end this December, is part of DOST-SEI's e-learning program to upgrade the knowledge and skills of elementary and high school science and mathematics teachers.
The RSTCs are based in the following higher education institutions all over the country: Saint Louis University, Mariano Marcos State University, Saint Mary's University, Central Luzon State University, Philippine Normal University, Bicol University, West Visayas State University, University of San Carlos, University of Eastern Philippines, Western Mindanao State University, Mindanao State University, Xavier University, Ateneo de Davao University, Notre Dame of Marbel University, and University of Southern Mindanao.
The agreement with DOST-SEI is to train 15 trainers from each RSTC, or a total of 150 trainers. The remaining 18 trainers are expected to participate in other scheduled offerings of the OTL course, which is also listed in the UPOU curriculum as EDDE 210.
Relatedly, the UPOU, along with the UP National Institute of Science and Mathematic Education Development (NISMED), was tapped by DOST-SEI to develop the modules in elementary and high school science and mathematics for use in its training program for teachers. Professors Patricia B. Arinto and Luisa Mariano of the Faculty of Education, and Professor Sheila Bonito of the Faculty of Management & Development Studies, did the instructional design and copyediting of the modules. UP NISMED staff served as course authors and content readers.
