UPOU publishes book on Environmental Communication

The University of the Philippines Open University has released its most recent book: “Environmental Communication” by Dr. Alexander G. Flor, professor of development communication of the University of the Philippines Open University.

The book, designed as a textbook for a course on the principles and techniques of communication applied to environmental protection and management, adopts a deep ecology approach to environmental communication. It advocates enculturation, conflict management, and social transformation – themes that represent an emerging school of thought that goes beyond conventional, time-bound communication campaigns.

“Environmental Communication” presents a set of communication tools put together from the author's twenty-five years of experience in environmental communication. Flor began his environmental communication practice in 1976 as producer-host of a radio program on ecology where he also produced environmental radio spots and recorded environmental songs. Flor has served as information, education, and communication consultant/specialist of various World Bank, United Nation Development Programme, CIDA, and USAID environment-related project

Flor, Dean of the UPOU Faculty of Information and Communication Studies, said that the book builds upon the proposition that “environmentalism began with environmental communication… and that it would not have flourished had it not been for popular media.”

The book is available at the UPOU Information Office , Los Banos, Laguna. For orders, send email to info@upou.org.
