UPOU m-Learning Program Launched
M-Learning is here! In cooperation with SMART Communications Inc, the UP Open University (UPOU) launched this week a killer application of SMS technology, more popularly known as TXTing.
The application, called mobile learning or m-learning, involves the use of SMS or TXT for delivering short lessons on topics of general interest, such as proper diet and nutrition, health risk factor assessment, calculating large numbers without using a calculator, and spelling commonly misspelled words.
SMART subscribers who are interested in these topics can text UPOU to 700UPOU or 7008768. Reply M-LEARNING to the message received. Take the pre-test or diagnostic on your topic of choice. Those who need further instruction, based on their pre-test scores, are encouraged to buy the UPOU m-learning modules.
The modules are short lessons on various topics presented in print modules that are handy in size. Also being developed are modules in VCD, interactive CD-ROM, and webpage format. Three print modules are now available for only 50 pesos each:
. Lifestyle Check by Sheila Bonito (on Health Risk Factor Assessment)
. Mental Math by Ma. Luisa Mariano (on how to calculate large numbers without using a calculator)
. BSTA TXTRS, PUR SPLLRS? by Portia Padilla (on how to spell commonly misspelled words)
Where applicable, there are interactive activities using SMS, such as multiple choice questions for drill and practice, reflective questionnaires with interpretation of results, games, and short messages between tutor and student.
Learners who want to earn a certificate of course completion can apply to take a proctored examination upon completion of a set of related modules.
Information on UPOU's programs and courses is also available by text to SMART subscribers. Simply text 700UPOU or 7008768.
m-Learning is for learners on the go, or people with little time for formal study but who nonetheless feel the need to increase their knowledge and hone their skills.
In developed countries, m-learning makes use of Personal Digital Assistants or PDAs and Pocket PCs connected to wireless networks. The UPOU program is therefore a pioneering effort in its use of cellphones in m-learning.
The three principles that guide the UPOU m-Learning program are authentic communication, learner autonomy, and opportunity for student reflection.
There is authentic communication in that:
. There are no technology access barriers. Text messaging is a popular mode of communication already available to a wide segment of the population. No training is necessary to use the technology; users adapt quickly and enthusiastically.
. SMS responses are quicker than those obtained via website or email.
. Responses from the tutor can be automated or personal.
. Learners who are usually shy might find it easier to ask or answer questions in an SMS environment.
There is learner autonomy because:
. The technology is personally owned and does not have to be shared with other users.
. Learning can take place outside of work hours.
. Learning can take place even during "unproductive" times (for example, while traveling in public transport, or while waiting for an appointment).
. The technology can be adapted to people with special needs (e.g., those who are deaf or who have mobility problems).
There is opportunity for student reflection since
. A student can take time before responding to a question/problem.
. The size limitations of SMS inputs could force learners to prioritize, and thereby promote higher order thinking.
