UPOU participates in the ASEAN Inter-University Conference

 

Faculty members of the UP Open University presented papers in the 8th ASEAN Inter-University Conference (IUC) on Social Development held on 28-31 May 2008 at the Century Park Hotel, Manila , Philippines .

Dr. Grace Javier Alfonso, UPOU Chancellor, presented a paper titled “UPOU: Entering the Fourth Generation of Open and Distance Learning Environment.” She also served as chair of the parallel session on Distance Learning and ICT.

Dr. Alexander G. Flor, Dean of the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS), paper is “Carving ICT Niches within the ASEAN in a Globalized Educational and Knowledge Environment.”

Prof. Alejo Espinosa, a professor from FICS, presented the paper “Using Open Source Videos for Philippine High School Science Education: Early Findings in Rural High Schools.”

Other presentors from UPOU were Dr. Paz H. Diaz, former Dean of the Faculty of Management and Development Studies and Mr. Zandro Rapadas, a Master of Development Communication and current president of the UPOU Alumni Foundation. The UPOU Multimedia Center video-documented the conference.

The IUC is the biggest bi-annual gathering of academic and social scientists in Southeast Asia . It has helped advance the understanding of human condition in all its dimensions in Southeast Asia . This year’s IUC was hosted by the University of the Philippines , through the College of Mass Communication and the School of Labor and Industrial Relations, UP Diliman; Union Network International-Asia Pacific; Fair Trade Alliance; and the National University of Singapore.
