UP Centennial kicks off on 8 January 2008
The University of the Philippines (UP), the nation’s top learning institution, kicked off its centennial celebration on 8 January 2008. The theme of the celebration is “UP: Excellence, Service, and Leadership in the Next 100 Years.”
The celebration started with a motorcade cum parade from UP Manila . This group converged with the another group of students, faculty and staff members at the Quezon Memorial Circle and proceeded to the University Avenue , UP Diliman.
A100-torch relay at the UP Academic oval was also held with Mr. Fernando Javier, a 100-year-old alumnus, lighting the first torch. The torch-relay was participated in by 100 selected individuals from all campuses of UP -- UP Manila , UP Diliman, UP Los Baños, UP Visayas, UP Open University, UP Mindanao, and UP Baguio .
Chancellor Grace Javier-Alfonso led the UPOU team who participated in the 100-torch parade. The other members of the team were Vice Chancellor Victoria A. Bautista; Vice Chancellor Melinda F. Lumanta; Dean Maria Fe V. Mendoza; Dean Nemah N. Hermosa; Dr. Juan Pablo Nañagas, a UPOU alumnus; and Mr. Richard Gomez, an Associate in Arts student.
The celebration of the UP Centennial has officially begun on July 18, 2007 and will last through the December 31, 2008. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, through Proclamation No. 913, has declared the whole of 2008 as the UP Centennial Year.

- Launching of the book “100 Narratives of People who were of UPOU
- Unfurling of the sewn tapestry
- Launching ceremonies of UPOU’s 100% Courses Online
- Launching and sale of the Coffetable Book on the History ODL in UP
- Pag-aalay: UPOU TV Special
- Launching ceremonies of the Centennial wall with 100 learning packages and inauguration of Centennial Oblation Park ’s Efficiency Lagoon and Humanity Lagoon
- Inauguration of the Centennial Oblation Plaza
