UPOU Publishes new books
UPOU students as well as those of other colleges and universities will benefit from three newly published UPOU modules: Environmental Communication, Introduction to Psychology, and Second Language Teaching.
Environmental Communication is valuable as a textbook for a course on the principles and techniques of communication applied to environmental protection and management. It adopts a deep ecology approach to environmental communication. It advocates enculturation, conflict management, and social transformation – themes that represent an emerging school of thought that goes beyond conventional, time-bound communication campaigns.
Dr. Alexander G. Flor, a professor of development communication of the UPOU, and Dean of its Faculty of Information and Communication Studies, wrote the book. Prior to his appointment with the UPOU, he was information, education, and communication consultant and specialist in environment-related projects of international agencies such as the World Bank, the United Nation Development Programme, CIDA, and USAID.
The second book, Introduction to Psychology , provides readers with a broad understanding of human behavior and mental processes. It answers questions about people's behavior, attitudes, and thinking patterns. The author is Dr. Cynthia Ticao, a former faculty member of the University of the Philippines in the Visayas. She is currently the Executive Director of Gede Foundation; a nonprofit organization based in Washington , D.C. , USA that does HIV/AIDS prevention work in Africa .
The third publication is Second Language Teaching , written by Ruanni F. Tupas. The book deals with the sociolinguistic, political, ideological, and cultural nature of second language teaching (SLT). The book traces the theoretical development of SLT, identifies major approaches to second language teaching, reviews important concepts and practices in Communicative Language Teaching as it related to the Philippines experience, and explores current and alternative ways of teaching English as a second language.
Dr. Tupas holds an MA from the University of the Philippines Diliman and a PhD from the National University of Singapore (NUS). He is currently a Lecturer with the Centre for English Language Communication of NUS.
The books are available at the UPOU Information Office , Los Banos, Laguna. For orders, please call 049 536-6001 to 6006 local 710 or email to info@upou.org .
