Filipiniana Online

This multimedia course, which runs for 16 weeks online, provides an overview of pioneering and critical research on Philippine arts and culture. It can be taken for credit (the course is also listed as Cultural Studies 250, with a credit equivalent of 3 units), by itself or as an elective in any graduate program.

Objectives

The course aims to enable students to:
  • Gain an appreciation of local and national Philippine cultural history;
  • Analyze Filipino paintings and other forms of visual arts;
  • Delineate the distinctive Philippine elements of a variety of Philippine rituals, dances, musical forms, plays and films; and
  • Produce their own articulation of Philippine culture in the form of an essay or multimedia creative work (e.g., a website).

Admission Requirements

The course should appeal to students interested in supplementing classroom instruction with multimedia sources on Filipiniana, professionals (diplomats, businessmen, lawyers, social scientists, cultural practitioners, etc.), Filipinos here and abroad, Filipinists and Southeast Asian scholars and enthusiasts.

To be admitted, applicants must have:

  1. a Bachelor's degree
  2. basic computer and Internet skills (wordprocessing and email, surfing the Internet)
  3. Access to a computer with the following specifications:
    • at least 486 Pentium or Power PC
    • Windows 95/98/2000 or Windows NT (or higher)
    • Internet connection
    • Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher

Course Structure

The course consists of four modules: Philippine Theater, Philippine Literature, Philippine Arts and Philippine Popular Culture. Each module includes an electronic lecture from the Faculty-in-Charge and asynchronous electronic discussions with the Facuty-in-Charge, other specialists, and course participants.

The learning package includes the Filipiniana Reader containing essays by well-known Filipinists and the Filipiniana CD-ROM, a multimedia archive of Filipiniana art and music.
